Jennifer Lopez Files for Divorce from Ben Affleck After Two Years of Marriage
Lopez and Affleck tied the knot in Las Vegas on July 17, 2022, after rekindling their romance in 2021.
Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are parting ways once again.
On Tuesday, August 20, Lopez, 55, officially filed for divorce from Affleck, 52, more than two years after their marriage in July 2022. Multiple sources confirmed the news to PEOPLE, with TMZ being the first to break the story.
Lopez submitted the divorce paperwork in Los Angeles County Superior Court, citing April 26, 2024, as the date of their separation.
She filed on her own, choosing to represent herself without the assistance of a lawyer. Although their wedding in Las Vegas took place on July 17, 2022, August 20 marked the second anniversary of their larger wedding ceremony in Georgia.
The singer did not disclose whether a prenuptial agreement was in place, and sources informed TMZ that there was none.
A source told PEOPLE, “She made every effort to make the relationship work and is heartbroken. The kids remain her top priority, as always.”
Lopez and Affleck had a high-profile rekindling of their romance in 2021, more than 17 years after they were initially engaged and postponed their planned September 2003 wedding.
The couple officially ended their relationship for the first time in January 2004 but remained on friendly terms in the years that followed.
PEOPLE first reported in April 2021 that the musician and Oscar-winning director were spending time together again following Lopez’s breakup with former MLB star Alex Rodriguez.
In July of that year, Lopez and Affleck made their relationship Instagram official and soon after attended the 2021 Venice Film Festival together.
Lopez and Affleck’s engagement was confirmed by a representative in April 2022. The couple then held a surprise wedding in Las Vegas on July 17, 2022, followed by a larger ceremony in Georgia at Affleck’s 87-acre estate near Savannah in August.
The ceremony was attended by Matt Damon, Kevin Smith, Jason Mewes, and Hollywood talent agent Patrick Whitesell, with podcaster and life coach Jay Shetty officiating.
Lopez shares 16-year-old twins Max and Emme with her ex-husband Marc Anthony, to whom she was married from 2004 to 2014.
Affleck, who was previously married to Jennifer Garner from 2005 to 2018, shares three children with Garner: Violet, 18, Seraphina, 15, and Samuel, 12.
The couple recently worked together on Lopez’s Prime Video musical documentary, This Is Me… Now: A Love Story, which accompanied the release of her album of the same name in February.
Rumors of marital discord began circulating in May after the couple spent some time apart. Lopez was busy promoting her movie Atlas, attending the 2024 Met Gala, and preparing for her 2024 nationwide tour, while Affleck stayed in Los Angeles to work on his film The Accountant 2.
In May, multiple sources informed PEOPLE that Lopez and Affleck were no longer living together in their Los Angeles home.
Although they were seen together at various events in the spring, a source revealed that their contrasting personalities and approaches to their public lives made things “difficult on a day-to-day basis.”
Before the divorce filing, Lopez and Affleck spent much of the summer on opposite coasts. Lopez spent July 4, their second wedding anniversary, and her 55th birthday during an extended stay in the Hamptons, New York, while Affleck remained in Los Angeles for most of the summer.
In June, the couple listed their Beverly Hills mansion, which they had shared since June 2023, for sale. Affleck subsequently purchased a new $20 million home in Los Angeles in July.
After Lopez returned to L.A. in August, a source told PEOPLE that she “hasn’t seen Ben for weeks” and that the couple is “moving on separately.”
